There is a very big market in fake perfumes as you will undoubtedly see if you travel abroad particularly to Asia and the Far East. The problem is that the fakes are so good that it takes an expert to separate them from the genuine article.
In the UK and Europe there are stringent controls to prevent the sale of counterfeit items, but this is far from true elsewhere where factories employ thousands to produce fake designer clothing, CDs, DVDs and of course perfume. The industry thrives because there are many people out there who are more than willing to pay a couple of pounds to watch the latest movie release or wear Chelsea’s football strip, instead of succumbing to high street prices and the same applies to perfume. If only an expert can tell the difference, why bother to pay more than is necessary?
Besides its odour, a fake perfume will have an identical bottle, exactly the same brand name/logo and packaging; but you use it for that special occasion and you may find yourself smelling not so sweet as you think, because fake perfumes don’t last as long as the real thing – maybe an hour instead of half a day or more!! It’s the same old story – buy that movie on DVD in Dolby Digital that hasn’t been released yet and it will more than likely be in Mono; wash that fake designer t-shirt and see the colours run before your very eyes.
To help spot a fake perfume, (amongst other things):-
- Read the labelling. Check for spelling mistakes.
- Check the quality of all items including the cellophane wrapping, the box and of course the bottle. In particular the height, width and basic design.
Check for skin irritation, blemishes and rashes. |
