There is good reason to be confused as to the different phrases relating to perfume that are in general circulation. If you don’t know the basics, you could easily end up buying your loved one a bottle of eau de toilette instead of her much adored perfume. As with everything in this world, price is usually a good indication as to what it is you’re actually buying and perfume is no exception, so put that loose change away and get your credit card out if you’re out to impress.
Perfume generally contains from 15-40% perfume concentrate and is the purest form of fragrance you can buy and as you’d expect – it is the most expensive.
Eau de parfum is the next best thing and will contain from 7-15% concentrate. This is the most popular form of perfume as it is long-lasting and doesn’t require a house remortgage for its purchase.
Eau de toilette is where many people come unstuck. It contains up to 6% perfume concentrates and has a much shorter half-life than its more expensive counterparts. It was originally intended to be a part of the freshing-up process first thing in the morning whilst one partakes of the usual bathroom activities - hence its name.
Eau de cologne is just another term for eau de toilette which has been passed down through the years. It’s name?? – Well, believe it or not, this was a fragrance popularised by Napoleon!! |
