Fragrant Perfumes

A perfume is a combination of certain ingredients that when mixed together give off a distinctive smell and is derived from the Latin “per fumum” which means “through smoke”.  These ingredients comprise essential oils, aroma-giving compounds, solvents and fixatives. Perfumes are commonly applied to the human body but they can also be used to give objects and rooms a pleasant odour.

The make-up of commercially available perfumes is kept secret to guard against copies. Although you will see fake perfumes for sale across the globe, they may be very near perfect and those less discerning amongst us might not be able to distinguish between the fake and the real thing. A perfume expert however will be able to spot the difference, just as a wine-taster can tell the difference between a cheap and expensive wine.

Solvents are vital ingredients in perfume manufacture, because without them various health issues would arise. Volatile elements if left in concentrated form, would undoubtedly cause allergic reactions in some people and may even cause skin damage when applied directly onto the skin. Most perfumes are diluted by the means of ethanol and water, but other dilutants such as coconut oil and wax are not uncommon.
